Kórinthos (Corinth)
( Highly Recommended )

It is a pity that the modern town of Kórinthos is not more appealing, for on its doorstep the visitor can see the site of Ancient Corinth, the looming hilltop ruins of Acrocorinth and one of the wonders of the modern world - the Corinth Canal. It is true that the last of these will not detain you long, but it should not be missed, for it is a beautiful, as well as a brilliant, engineering achievement. It is almost 6.5km long and 90m high but only 27m across, making it unsuitable for many of today's supertankers.
Acrocorinth was also a startling engineering feat in its day. This ancient acropolis has walls that run for 2km on top of the hill which dominates the surrounding plain and the Gulf of Corinth. Inside the walls are the remains of further fortifications, houses, mosques and churches, and the views from here are extraordinary.
Down below is the site of Ancient Corinth, once the Roman capital of Greece, with a population of 300,000, supported by a further 460,000 slaves. It also had a great reputation for licentious living, so St Paul's Epistles to the Corinthians were particularly relevant. The well-preserved remains and the Archaeological Museum on the site help the visitor to visualise the city as it was (apart from the bawdy behaviour). The most noticeable building here is the Temple of Apollo, which dates from the 6th century BC, making it one of the oldest of the many temples to be found in Greece.
