Delfoí (Delphi)
( Do not miss ) The ancient Greeks thought Delphi the centre of the world, and anyone visiting the site today will understand why. It has an indisputable atmosphere and an impressive setting between high cliffs and a vast valley of olive trees which falls away below you. Pilgrims visited the Oracles at Delphi from roughly the 12th century BC to the 4th century AD, to seek advice on all kinds of subjects. The most famous of all the Oracles was the Sibyl, whose rock can still be seen today at the side of the Sacred Way which winds from the entrance up to the remains of the Temple of Apollo. The temple ruins date from the 4th century BC, as does the 5,000-seat theatre behind. Climb to the top row of the theatre for one of the best views over the site and down the valley. Above here is a well-preserved stadium and near by is also a superb museum.
