Salamína (Salamis)
( Worth Seeing )

Salamis is something of an oddity. It is actually the largest of the Argo-Saronic islands but probably the least known outside Greece because it is the least developed for tourism. In fact the capital, Salamis Town, doesn't even have a hotel. It is only a kilometre from Piraeus, making it a very short hop on the ferry, and indeed many Athenians commute to work from here. It was the birthplace of Euripides and its name is best known as the setting for the Battle of Salamis, in 480 BC, when the large Persian fleet was defeated by the much smaller but speedier fleet of Greek triremes.
Salamis Town has little to recommend it, and the port where the ferries arrive even less, the two being 3km apart and connected by a bus service. However, if you can devote a little time to exploration, the island has its attractions: the fishing harbour and old mansions at Ágios Nikolaos, the 17th-century Monastery of Faneromeni and the small resort of Peristeria are all worth a visit.
