Epídavros (Epidavros)
( Do not miss ) The ancient theatre at Epidavros is the finest in Greece, for its setting, its state of preservation and its acoustics. It is said that you can hear a pin drop on the stage from the top of the 55 rows of seats. The theatre was built in the 4th century BC but only discovered at the end of the 19th century. It was finally restored in 1954. It can seat 14,000 and is still in use for an annual drama festival held in July and August. Spectators look out over the site of Epidavros, which was dedicated to the healing God Asklepios, the son of Apollo. The site has the remains of a guesthouse, bath, gymnasium and sanctuary buildings, although many are overgrown. The site museum contains a good collection of statues, including some of Asklepios, and a partial reconstruction of the Tholos or rotunda.
