Marathónas (Marathon)
( Worth Seeing ) In 490 BC news of the Greek victory over the Persians at Marathon was relayed to Athens by a soldier called Pheidippides, who ran the 41km to deliver his message and then died. The event is commemorated in the name of today's marathon race, and the battle is commemorated in the mound under which the 192 Athenians who lost their lives in the fight were buried. The fact that 6,400 Persians are also said to have been killed gives the scale of the heroic victory. There is a small museum near to the modern village of Marathon, an otherwise fairly nondescript place, and above the museum a hill which gives a good view of the Plain of Marathon, once filled with those warring soldiers.
