The Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis is scarcely sacred today, with a multi-lane motorway running past dockyards, factories and oil refineries. But in the 6th century BC, this was one of the most sacred sites in the ancient world, home to a cult which attracted up to 30,000 followers. Their rituals were so secret that no records remain - only speculation. Speculation will also be needed to imagine the site as it was, for these days only foundations and overgrown pathways remain, though models in the museum help the visitor build up a picture.
