Dáfní (Daphni)
( Worth Seeing )

Some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the whole of Greece can be found in this 11th-century monastery, close by the thundering noise of the main Athens-Corinth highway. The glorious golden mosaic of Christ Pantocrator stares down from the dome of the church, and below this are mosaics of the Annunciation, Nativity, Baptism and Transfiguration. The buildings themselves are also well preserved, on the site of what was once a Temple of Apollo. One of Apollo's symbols was the laurel - or daphni, in Greek.
