Kifisiá (Kifissia)
( Highly Recommended ) This fashionable suburb, at the northern end of the metro line which runs from Piraeus, has long been an enviable address in Athens. At 276m, the cooler climate of the area attracts the wealthier citizens, as a glance at the choice of high-street shops will indicate. The town is an attractive and easy day out for the visitor too, though not all north-bound trains go all the way to Kifissia, so check the destination board first. Those that do pass the modern Olympic stadium at Irini. From the Kifissia stop you can hail one of the horse-drawn carriages for a tour around the area, with its many grand mansions. Alternatively, simply walk up through the park, cross the busy road and continue on up, perhaps pausing on the left to sample the delights at Varsos, said to be the oldest of Athens' many zaharoplasteions (pastry shops). A left turn at the next junction takes you to the Goulandris Natural History Museum, a small but impressive collection, which naturally concentrates on the flora and fauna of Greece. It is especially good on birds, butterflies, sea shells, and environmental problems. The herbarium alone is said to contain over 250,000 specimens.
