Mykínes (Mycenae)
( Do not miss ) 'I have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon,' claimed German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann to the King of Greece when he unearthed a golden mask on this site. This and other stunning golden treasures are on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Agamemnon's palace or not - and later carbon-dating suggests not - the ruins are still among the most famous and popular in Greece. Few visitors will not experience a thrill when seeing for the first time the famous Lion Gate (c1250 BC), almost as familiar an image of Greece as the Parthenon. Beyond the Gate, on the right, is the Royal Cemetery where the golden treasures were found. Near by is the Treasury of Atreus, a simple but superbly striking royal burial tomb. Phone: 0751-76585 Open: Daily 8-7 (winter 8-5). Closed public holidays Bus: Take Náfplio bus and ask for Mycenae Accessible: None Admission: Expensive |
