Markets & Bazaars

Starting in Monastiráki Square, walk slightly downhill along the main road, Ermou.

On Sundays this is lined with junk stalls, and on weekdays furniture and other shops are open. To your left is the Monastiráki bazaar area, busy every day.

Go straight ahead through the traffic-lights and on your right you reach the boundary fence for the Kerameikós Cemetery.

To visit this continue walking - the entrance is on your right. On Sundays this area is packed with market stalls.

If not visiting the cemetery, turn right where the wall begins, along Melidoni.

On your right is a synagogue.

Turn left at the end, taking the second right - Psaromilingon. Cross the small square and continue along Korinis.

You are now heading for the old market area of Athens, down narrow streets where shops selling nuts, bread, spices and other goods are plentiful.

At the end of Korinis turn right (Sapfous), left (Menandrou) and finally right along Sofokleous.

Sofokleous is another street at the heart of the trading centre, with specialist shops and wholesalers bustling at peak times.

When you reach Athinas, turn right.

Cross the road to visit the old Central Market, noted for meat and fish but also selling many other Greek foodstuffs. Vegetarians may prefer not to venture too far inside the meat and fish sections.

Continue down Athinas and back to Monastiráki Square.
