Kaisarianí
( Worth Seeing )

The main water supply for Athens once came from the spring here, which was known as the Imperial (kaisariane) Spring after Emperor Hadrian, who built the aqueduct to convey water to the city. The cluster of beautifully preserved monas tery buildings stands 450m up on the slopes of Mount Hymettus, with cells, refectory and kitchen among those remaining. Twelfth-century frescoes are among the many attractions of this quiet retreat, just a few kilometres outside Athens.
