Spétses
( Highly Recommended ) Spétses is the Argo-Saronic island furthest from Athens, but it can still be reached in little over two hours on one of the fast Flying Dolphin services. It's less expensive than Hydra, has better beaches than Póros or Hydra, is relatively green (its name is a corruption of the Greek word for 'piney') and therefore is just as popular as all the other islands, despite the distance involved! Spétses became renowned in the late 1960s as the setting for the cult novel by British author John Fowles, The Magus, which was later filmed. Fowles lived and taught here and renamed it Phraxos for the purposes of his fiction. The factual Spétses town has, like Hydra Town, many handsome 18th-century mansions built on the strength of its wealthy merchant shipping fleets. One of the finest, built in 1795, now houses the island's museum and is well worth a visit. Spétses' charm as a place to visit, or to stay overnight on a jaunt from Athens, is enhanced by a partial ban on cars and a good reputation for eating places.
