Athens

Many people choose cities for weekend breaks, and others will merely pass a day in Athens when on their way to the ever-popular Greek islands, but lucky are those who have several days in which to explore this multi-layered city. Athens is a Mediterranean city, a port, a city on the very edge of Europe, and a place with an extremely strong living culture, not merely a history. Enjoy it all.

The high notes of Athens are, of course its archaeological remains and the National Archaeological Museum, which displays the best finds from all over the Greek world. However, don't neglect the smaller museums, or the bustle of the real city on show in the flea markets and the Central Market. As in other Mediterranean countries, life here is lived on the streets, and the passing parade is as much a part of the appeal as the historical aspect. The Greeks invented drama, and still thrive on it. Athens may hit you - forcibly - as a very busy city indeed, and as in all capital cities people have less time for strangers than they do in the countryside. Don't be deceived, however. Athenians are natural talkers, hagglers and helpers. If you're lost, just ask - and then bear in mind that a Greek would rather give you the wrong answer than no answer at all! It's not that they don't like to admit their ignorance, more that they don't want to disappoint you by not being able to help.
