Náfplio
( Do not miss )

Náfplio is far from being the largest place in the Peloponnese - that distinction goes to the port of Pátra, Greece's third largest city - but it is certainly one of the most attractive. Indeed, many Greeks regard it as the prettiest town in the whole of Greece.
There are several reasons for its charm. It looks like a Greek island port, clustered at the base of a headland dominated by not one but two fortresses. Its streets are old and narrow, with Italianate balconies which are flower-filled in summer. It has an immensely attractive large, open, traffic-free main square, while across its attractive harbour can be seen the mountain peaks of the rest of the Peloponnese.
Náfplio is also very cosmopolitan for a small town, attracting artists and craftsmen, and with the daily papers of the world available in several of its shops. It has a range of very good eating places, a small beach and easy access to important ancient sites such as Mycenae, Tiryns and Epídavros. It also has a unique place in Greece's modern history, for it was Náfplio, not Athens, which was the first capital of modern Greece. The country's first President, Kapodistrias, lived and was assassinated here.
Its history is reflected in the two main fortresses, a war museum, folklore museum and an archaeological museum with some fascinating items. Little wonder that Náfplio is such a popular spot for Athenians who want a holiday, or simply a short break from the city - it is a mere two hours' drive away.
