To skirt a series of rapids on the Connecticut River, the 6-mile Enfield Canal was built at Windsor in 1829. Horses towed boats weighing up to 70 tons, and three locks accommodated a 30-foot drop in elevation. Trains later supplanted river shipping, but Windsor Locks remains a major transportation hub as the home of Bradley International Airport.
