Named for an early settler, Lusk is a trading center for a ranching and dry-farming district that also is involved in some oil production. To the west are red-colored cliffs from which Native Americans obtained material for paint. Through this area ran the Cheyenne and Black Hills Stage Line, whose route is marked by two rows of white posts. Three miles east on US 20, a marker indicates the location of a segment of the Texas Trail. The trail was used to herd cattle from Texas to the open ranges of Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas.

NATIONAL PARKAgate Fossil Beds National Monument Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is on SR 29, 22 miles south of Harrison or 34 miles north of Mitchell in the Niobrara River Valley. Imbedded in the sedimentary rock are fossils formed some 20 million years ago. Named for James Cook's Agate Springs Ranch, this 3,000-acre site also features Cook's collection of 19th- and 20th-century American Indian artifacts.

NATIONAL PARKBighorn National Forest In the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming, the Bighorn National Forest encompasses 1,115,073 acres. The forest is traversed by US 14 (Bighorn Scenic Byway), which crosses 8,950-foot Granite Pass and winds through scenic Shell Canyon and Falls; US 14A (Medicine Wheel Passage), which passes by Medicine Mountain near the enigmatic Medicine Wheel; and US 16 (Cloud Peak Skyway), which crosses 9,677-foot Powder River Pass and threads through beautiful Ten Sleep Canyon.
NATIONAL PARKBlack Hills National Forest In the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota and extending westward into Wyoming, the Black Hills National Forest covers more than 1.2 million acres. It was established in 1897. Stands of ponderosa pine, spruce and aspen are home to mountain lions, white-tailed and mule deer, elk and turkeys. Mountain goats and bighorn sheep are sometimes seen throughout the hills. Visitors should note that while summer days are warm, the nights can be quite cool.
