Edwards Air Force Base's predecessor, Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range, was established in 1933 and became an important part of Lancaster's economy. The city's population expanded beginning in the 1980s as Lancaster became a bedroom community for Los Angeles and other Southern California locations.
