During the Texas Revolution, Gonzales citizens were the first to challenge the Mexicans. Rather than return a small brass cannon the Mexicans had left as protection against Native Americans, the community unfurled the first Lone Star battle flag—with the words “Come and Take It”—and used the cannon to fire the first shots of the revolution Oct. 2, 1835. The First Shot Monument is 7 miles southwest on SR 97.

NATIONAL PARKPadre Island National Seashore Padre Island National Seashore is parallel to the Gulf coast and reached via the JFK causeway at Corpus Christi. The national seashore covers 70 miles of 113-mile Padre Island, considered the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. Some 600 species of plants and wildflowers can be found on the sand-duned strip of land, which is only .5 to 3 miles wide. To the east lies the Gulf and to the west the Laguna Madre, including a portion of the Intracoastal Waterway. On the Laguna Madre side lies the park's Bird Island Basin, a highly regarded and popular windsurfing spot.
