Cape Elizabeth was named by Capt. John Smith in 1615 for Princess Elizabeth, sister of Charles I of England. Early settlers managed to exist by fishing and farming. Closely associated with Portland (then Falmouth) in its earliest days, the settlement was recognized as a separate district in 1765 and finally granted status as an incorporated town during the Revolutionary unrest of 1775.

NATIONAL PARKFort Stanwix National Monument Off SR 26 at 100 N. James St. in Rome, Fort Stanwix was built during the French and Indian War. In 1776, at the outbreak of the Revolution, the fort was repaired and restored by American rebels. Attacked by a force of British, Tories and Native Americans in 1777, it withstood a 3-week siege.
