When French explorer and diplomat Samuel de Champlain entered the estuary of the Saint John River on June 24, 1604, he named the river in honor of the saint whose feast day was celebrated on that date. Several thousand United Empire Loyalists settled at the site following the American Revolutionary War, and in 1785 Saint John became the first incorporated city in Canada.

NATIONAL PARKCape Breton Highlands National Park Cape Breton Highlands National Park has entrances on the Cabot Trail 5 kilometres (3 mi.) northeast of Chéticamp on the west side of the island and at Ingonish Beach on the east. The park is in the northern part of Cape Breton Island. Bounded on the west by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, the park protects 950 square kilometres (366 sq. mi.) of highlands and coastal wilderness. NATIONAL PARKForillon National Park Forillon National Park (Parc national Forillon) encompasses 244 square kilometres (95 sq. mi.) on the northeast tip of the Gaspé Peninsula and is accessible from Gaspé via Hwy. 132 E. Jagged seaside cliffs, capes, pebbled beach coves, fir covered highlands and ocean terraced lowlands typify park scenery. Of sedimentary origin, geologic formations contain rocks ranging in age from the Ordovician to the Devonian periods.Forillon National Park
