Havre de Grace rose to prosperity as a mercantile center in the mid-1800s, due in large part to the town's location at the convergence of the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. By 1836 a railroad, canal and steamship line served the city. From 1839 to the early 1900s mule-drawn barges carried coal, lumber, grains, ore and iron products between Havre de Grace and Wrightsville, Pa., 45 miles upstream.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. A few villages are scattered along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, providing easy stopover points for food, lodging and cultural heritage. Bottlenose dolphins can often be seen close to shore, shorebirds and waterfowl abound, and seashell hunters will find a good variety. The sand is soft and deep at times.
