What to Do in Yakima

Yakima (YACK-i-mah) occupies the west bank of its namesake river. The town grew up around a Northern Pacific Railroad depot established in 1884. Originally called North Yakima, the state legislature dropped North from the town's name in 1918. The valley's irrigated fields provide a verdant contrast to the surrounding arid foothills. Fruit warehouses and packing sheds lining the railroad tracks west of First Street, historically known as Produce Row, attest to Yakima's importance as a food processing and shipping center.
