The city's name is derived from the prairie portage between the Red and Assiniboine rivers and Lake Manitoba. In the heart of the city at Crescent Road and Royal Road S. is Island Park. Surrounded by horseshoe-shaped Crescent Lake, this scenic park has a deer sanctuary, a large captive flock of Canada geese and offers opportunities for other bird-watching. Park features include playground areas, exhibition grounds, seasonal harness racing, a golf course, a campground, a water park, a swimming pool, an arboretum, tennis courts, picnic areas, an arena and bicycling and hiking trails.

NATIONAL PARKChippewa National Forest In north-central Minnesota, Chippewa National Forest encompasses approximately 666,000 acres, including some of the largest lakes in the state—Winnibigoshish, Leech and Cass—and more than 700 smaller bodies of water.
NATIONAL PARKFort Union Trading Post National Historic Site Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, reached via US 2 and SR 1804, is 25 miles southwest of Williston, N.D., and 24 miles northeast of Sidney, Mont. Founded by John Jacob Astor for his American Fur Co. in 1828, the trading post became the center for the fur trade on the Upper Missouri River. The fort was 1,800 miles by river from St. Louis, the nearest supply point.
NATIONAL PARKInternational Peace Garden On scenic Hwy. 10 and on US 281, the International Peace Garden consists of 1,451 acres (586 hectares) in Manitoba and an adjoining 888 acres (360 hectares) in North Dakota. Set among the lakes and streams of the wooded Turtle Mountains, the botanical garden and park commemorates the friendship between these two countries on the longest unfortified border in the world.
NATIONAL PARKRiding Mountain National Park During the Depression of the 1930s, the Depression Relief Program created jobs for the unemployed, 1,200 of whom were put to work constructing buildings for the park 1934-35. As is the case with much of the architecture found in the country's national parks, the style widely used was a rustic design that incorporated local materials. Perhaps the most eye-catching of their projects here is the East Gate Complex on Hwy. 19, which includes a registration building, two staff buildings and an overhead entrance sign. (Northern and southern complexes had been built but no longer exist.)
NATIONAL PARKSheyenne National Grassland Stretching along the Sheyenne River south of Fargo, Sheyenne National Grassland comprises 70,180 acres. A variety of landscapes—from prairie and sand hills (stabilized sand dunes) to forest—provide habitats for some of North Dakota's rarest plant and animal species, among them greater prairie chickens, two rare butterfly species and the endangered prairie-fringed orchid.
NATIONAL PARKVoyageurs National Park Voyageurs National Park encompasses 218,054 acres, including 84,000 acres of lakes forming part of a waterway stretching from Lake Superior to Lake of the Woods. The park commemorates the French-Canadian voyageurs who navigated these waters in canoes laden with furs and trade goods. Carrying up to 180 pounds on a portage, or overland route, and paddling for 16 hours a day, these intrepid men were the heart and brawn of the fur trade.
