Olean was founded at the headwaters of the Allegheny River in 1804 by Revolutionary War hero Maj. Adam Hoops. The settlement flourished as a supply depot and departure point for pioneers heading west on makeshift rafts and flatboats. With the completion of the Buffalo and Washington Railroad in the 1870s and a subsequent oil boom, Olean emerged as a major petroleum shipping center at the turn of the 20th century. The name Hoops gave his land 100 years earlier is derived from the Latin word oleum, meaning oil.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. Several scenic drives traverse the area; contact the forest for recommended routes.
