Luray was settled by a group of German-Swiss at the base of Massanutten Mountain along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. Laid out in 1812, Luray was close enough to Virginia's untamed wilderness that some of its early homes contained thick stone forts within their walls to guard against the constant threat of Native American attacks. These forts, usually in the basement, were kept supplied with firewood and food and often included a tunnel that connected with a well.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes.
