Lacey, a suburban community just east of Olympia, was first called Woodland in honor of pioneer Isaac Woods. By the 1890s Lacey boasted a sawmill, resort hotel and the region's major horse racing track. Tudor-style buildings dominate the campus of St. Martins University, founded in 1895 by the Order of St. Benedict. Tolmie State Park, 4.5 miles west of I-5 exit 111, features 1,800 feet of shoreline on Puget Sound, a saltwater marsh and a 2.5-mile nature trail. The near-shore waters are popular with scuba divers.

NATIONAL PARKColumbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Following the Columbia River in both Oregon and Washington, the scenic area consists of 292,500 acres of sheer cliffs, mountainous forestland, hilly deciduous woods and grassy plains. The Oregon section extends from the Sandy River near Troutdale about 80 miles east to the Deschutes River. Of interest are the loophole walls, underground magazines, artillery stores, command posts, barracks and gun and searchlight emplacements.
