Kellogg, the Silver Valley's largest town, celebrates its heritage as a longtime mining community. The Coeur d'Alene mining district has yielded more than a billion dollars in silver, lead, gold and zinc; the Lucky Friday and Galena Mine are a couple of the largest mines that still operate. The Shoshone County Mining and Smelting Museum, also known as The Staff House Museum chronicles the colorful history of Silver Valley. The Sunshine Miners Memorial, off I-90 exit 54, commemorates the 1972 mine fire that claimed 91 lives. It was one of the nation's worst metal and nonmetal mine disasters.
