Ellsworth began as a lumbering and shipbuilding center in 1763 and moved into the industrial era via waterpower from the Union River. Today the city is a bustling service center for the region. Lamoine State Park, 6.5 miles southeast of the southern terminus of SR 184, offers scenic views of Frenchman Bay and Mount Desert Island. Visitors can see eagles, ospreys, harbor seals and other wildlife at Ellsworth Marine Waterfront Park off Water Street.
