You dream of an idyllic vacation in San Francisco, where you can meander the hilly terrain, stroll (or drive) the Golden Gate Bridge and take in awe-inspiring views. This city is amazing year-round, but your timing can have a huge impact on the quality of your trip.
While there is technically no single best time to visit San Francisco, the different seasons and their weather can appeal to different types of visitors. With that in mind, we've highlighted the differences in the seasons that vacationers find especially appealing. We'll reveal when to visit San Francisco based on factors such as the weather, local events and anticipated crowds. Keep reading to discover your best time to visit San Francisco.
San Francisco Weather in Spring (March to May)
- Average Temperature (°F): High — 64.3, Low — 51
- Crowds: Moderate
If you like the idea of warm temperatures but aren't prepared to deal with summer crowds, spring could provide the ultimate middle ground. Pleasant temperatures can be expected, along with minimal rain and equally sparse crowds. This means that reserving a hotel or a tour should be easy, although Memorial Day Weekend is another matter altogether.
There's a lot to keep both locals and vacationers busy in the spring season and many of the best events feature beautiful flowers. When in doubt, check out Union Square in Bloom. For this spectacular occasion, one of the city's most iconic spots comes alive with stunning floral displays. There are also multiple film festivals planned, as well as the Uncorked! Wine Festival in Ghirardelli Square.
The beach begins to beckon as the weather changes and while this might not be as pleasant as a summer beach excursion, it can be great on a warmer-than-average day, especially if you're okay with staying out of the water. The downside? The season is sometimes known for the annual phenomenon known as "May Gray," when the region may be blanketed in fog. Don't let that stop you from booking a trip, however, because even the foggiest days can be delightful.
San Francisco Weather in Summer (June to August)
- Average Temperature (°F): High — 78.2, Low — 56.1
- Crowds: Busy
If weather is your top concern — or if you're restricted by school schedules — Summer may be your best bet for a San Francisco getaway. Rain is virtually nonexistent throughout the season, meaning you can typically leave your umbrella at home. Sunny weather is more likely, although locals sometimes complain of "No-Sky July," in which the fog continues beyond "May Gray" and "June Gloom."
Crowds can be expected when you hit San Francisco in summer, but thankfully, there are plenty of activities and festivals to keep all those visitors busy. This is an amazing time for music lovers to stop in, as the city hosts the iconic Golden Gate Jazz Festival and the Salsa Festival on the Fillmore. Those interested in unique fitness activities might like the sound of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, which starts with a swim from the shore of the island prison. San Francisco also hosts its popular annual Pride Parade in late June.
Patriotic opportunities are plentiful, including fireworks at Pier 39 and many local parades. Active vacationers will want to plan to participate in the beloved San Francisco Marathon, which takes hardcore runners through all the essentials: Presidio, Fisherman’s Wharf and, of course, the Golden Gate Bridge.
The other big perk of summer? This is an amazing time for visiting the beach. Warm temperatures keep San Francisco's generally chilly beaches feeling comfortable and, while this won't look much like your typical SoCal beach visit, you'll score some truly mesmerizing views.
San Francisco Weather in Fall (September to November)
- Average Temperature (°F): High — 70.2, Low — 51
- Crowds: Moderate or Low
If you crave balmy weather but dread the crowds that descend on the West Coast during the summer months, you may want to consider San Francisco in the fall. The season brings surprisingly warm temperatures to San Francisco. You'll get the best of both worlds: balmy conditions and minimal crowds. You might even be lucky to find some sunny days as the summer fog finally gives way to clear skies.
While there won't be quite as many events to enjoy, there's still something for everyone — and these events primarily attract locals. If you love physical challenges but can't make the July marathon, try September's Peak2Peak, which navigates a variety of scenic peaks and introduces both locals and visitors to the city's greatest gems. Sports fans can take advantage of basketball season starting and visit the Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors.
Is Chinatown on your itinerary? Consider building your trip around the annual Autumn Moon Festival. This colorful whirlwind kicks off with a dynamic parade (featuring exciting fire dancers) and also involves an amazing street fair with hundreds of vendors: street food, arts and crafts and so much more.
With such warm weather, there is no need to rely on local events to keep you entertained. You're always welcome to head for the beach, although you may still need to pack extra layers when it's breezy. This is also a great time to swing through San Fran as part of your journey along the Pacific Coast Highway, which in Fall remains easy to navigate but will lack summer's bumper-to-bumper problems.
San Francisco Weather in Winter (December to February)
- Average Temperature (°F): High — 58.1, Low — 42.1
- Crowds: Moderate or Low
From a weather perspective, winter may seem far from ideal. The temperatures plummet, but precipitation levels increase substantially, meaning you will want to bring layers and a trusted umbrella. There's so much more to your vacation planning than the weather, however, and if you want to see a uniquely festive take on this town, visiting in winter is the way to go.
There are many ways to celebrate the season without abundant snowfall. Union Square is a must-visit, as it transforms into a remarkable ice rink. This is also where you'll see the Great Tree, which twinkles with tens of thousands of LEDs. Holiday pop-up bars abound, as do theatrical productions that celebrate the season. The crowds are manageable, although the airport can feel chaotic near the end of December due to the holidays. Avoiding those heavy crowds can be done by visiting later in the winter season.
Tips for Finding the Right Time to Visit
As you determine your ideal San Francisco vacation timeline, think carefully about what you prioritize: weather, minimal crowds, or cost-effective travel? Are there any compelling events that you absolutely need to attend? Based on these parameters, what seems 'ideal' for one vacationer may not be a great fit for somebody else. No matter when you visit, you will discover a vibrant and welcoming city, with plenty of events and attractions to keep you busy.
