DESTINATION

Concord

The first gold nugget discovered in the nation was supposedly found nearby by a 12-year-old boy wading in Little Meadow Creek. Another story alleges that the 17-pound chunk was used as a doorstop before the boy's father took it to Fayetteville in 1802 and sold it to a jeweler for the grand sum of $3.50; in actuality it was worth approximately $3,600.
