POINT OF INTEREST

Wangjianglou Park (Wangjiang Tower Park)

Wuhou District, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610000

Wangjiang Tower Park fringes Chengdu’s Jinjiang River and is centered around the ornate Wangjiang Tower, which rises 130 feet (39 meters). The park honors the ninth-century female poet Xue Tao. You'll walk by 200 different types of bamboo, which create shady walkways and scenic avenues, and pass pavilions and a sculpture of Tao.

The basics

Wangjiang means “river-watching,” but it’s people-watching that draws most travelers to Wangjiang Tower Park. Pools, lakes, bridges, and pavilions offer a break from the pace of downtown life. Summer evenings see dance sessions, while old folk practice morning tai chi and play mahjong in teahouses in the day. Join a kung fu class, try your hand at art projects from calligraphy to painting, or join a local guide for a Chengdu tour.

Things to know before you go

  • Wangjiang Tower Park will interest people watchers, photographers, kung fu fans, and nature lovers.

  • There is a small admission charge for the historic areas of the park, including the 19th-century tower. Other areas are free.

  • Flat, smooth pathways make much of Wangjianglou Park accessible to travelers who use wheelchairs. Wangjiang Tower, other pavilions, and some bridges have steps.

How to get there

Wangjiang Tower Park sits on a curve of Chengdu’s Jinjiang River, about 4 miles (6 kilometers) southeast of Tianfu Square. It’s a long way from the nearest metro station, so rent a bicycle, catch the Nos. 19, 35, or 107 bus, or keep things simple and join a tour with transport.

When to get there

Wangjiang Tower Park is open from early morning until late in the evening, but the historic section closes in early evening. People watching is best in early mornings, evenings, and weekends. The 4-story Wangjiang Tower can make a great photo opportunity at sunset.

How to get out into nature in Chengdu

Like every Chinese city, Chengdu offers a range of parks and gardens. Outside the city, the 104-acre (42-hectare) Chengdu Botanical Garden delivers a riot of colorful flowers most every season. Bailuwan Ecological Wetland Park is home to a range of bird life, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding offers extensive landscaped grounds.
