Villa Strassburger

Av. Strassburger, Deauville, France, 14800

Deauville’s Villa Strassburger looks like a cross between a fairytale castle and a Tudor manor, but it’s not that old: it was built in 1907 for French playwright, Henri de Rothschild. It now belongs to Deauville and is open periodically for guided tours. History, art, and architecture enthusiasts will especially enjoy visiting.

The basics

The grand Norman regionalist-style residence is surrounded by parkland containing apple trees. You can see period furniture, decorations, paintings, and sculptures by 20th-century Italian artist Enrico Campagnola. The villa also has World War II-era underground passages and bunkers.

You can only enter Villa Strassburge during guided tours. Due to their irregular nature, most travelers arrange to visit independently. You can still see the exterior and the surrounding gardens if you can’t book a tour. Some sidecar tours of the Deauville area—especially popular around here—pass the villa or even include a guided tour when available.

Things to know before you go

  • There are no ticket sales onsite so you must buy your ticket online in advance.

  • Entrance is ticketed, with cheaper tickets for under 18s. It’s free for under 5s.

  • Guided tours are in French, so it’s best to have a functional knowledge of the language before booking a tour of the interior.

How to get there

Villa Strassburger is located near central Deauville on the southern side of the large racecourse. It’s easy to reach from other parts of the city; it’s just a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk from popular Deauville Beach. Deauville is about 124 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Paris, which takes 2.5 hours to drive or two hours on the train.

When to get there

The villa is open to the public but dates and times are sporadic and irregular. It’s important to check the website before planning your visit to avoid disappointment. It tends to be open more often in the summer and on weekends. You can rent the villa for private functions such as weddings.

Other Deauville sights and attractions

Deauville has been a popular coastal resort town since the 19th century and Deauville Beach is an especially lovely attraction. It’s edged by a boardwalk and bathing huts, and beach umbrellas are available in summer. As well as the villa, you can check out Deauville’s grand Casino Barrière, Les Franciscaines art museum, and the Eglise Saint-Augustin.
