POINT OF INTEREST

St. Peter's Church (Sankt Petri Kyrka)

Göran Olsgatan 4, Malmo, Sweden, 211 22

As one of the oldest buildings in Malmö, the 14th-century St. Peter’s Church is a must-see sight for history buffs. Noted for its flying buttresses, the church also contains late medieval frescoes and a 17th-century altarpiece —one of the largest in the Nordic countries. The church’s interior walls were whitewashed during the Reformation but some elaborate fixtures remain.

The Basics

Walking and bike tours of Malmö typically include a visit to the church as part of a wider itinerary that includes Turning Torso and Malmö Castle. You can also explore independently with an audio tour. Don’t miss the intramural Tradesman’s Chapel, notable for some of the best-preserved mural paintings in Scandinavia. Also worth checking out is the flooring in the oldest part of the church, which is made from broken gravestones.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • St. Peter’s Church is a must-see for those with an interest in architecture and Swedish history.

  • The church is still in active use, so be mindful of worshippers and keep noise to a minimum.

  • Visitors are not permitted to wander around 30 minutes before, during, or after services.

  • Most of the church is stroller and wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

St. Peter’s Church (Sankt Petri Kyrk) stands behind Malmö’s City Hall in the Old Town. It is around a 5-minute walk from Malmö Central train station; simply cross the Petribron bridge, head south on Goran Olsgatan, and look out for the church on your left.

When to Get There

The church is open to visitors from 10am to 6pm every day. Try to avoid visiting around times of services—check the church’s website for an up-to-date service schedule.

Architecture

Built in the Brick Gothic style with red and brown bricks, the design of St Peter’s Church was largely based on St. Mary’s Church in Lubeck, Germany. A 345-foot- (105-meter-) high tower was added in the 15th century, together with several chapels and the baptismal font. The church is also Malmö’s oldest preserved brick building.
