POINT OF INTEREST

Space City (Cite de l'Espace)

Avenue Jean Gonord, Toulouse, Occitania, 31500

The Space City (Cite de l'Espace) lets you realize your dreams of visiting space without having to undergo years of astronaut training. Here, you can explore inside a space station or space rocket; try on a space suit; and experience the sensation of walking on the moon.

The Basics

Space City features hundreds of interactive and multimedia space-themed exhibits. Highlights include the Astronauts exhibition, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at life on-board the International Space Station; a life-size replica of the Ariane 5 rocket; an IMAX cinema; and a planetarium. You can also explore a recreation of the Mir Space Station. Space City can get busy, especially in the summer months, so booking skip-the-line admission tickets is advised.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Tours and exhibits are mostly in French, although there are some information boards and pre-recorded information in English.

  • Put aside at least half-a-day to visit to the Space City. Pick up a map on arrival to ensure you don’t miss anything.

  • Visitor facilities include a gift shop, restaurants, picnic areas, and an ATM. Due to security regulations, baggage storage is not available.

  • Many of the exhibitions are outdoors, so bring weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes as there’s a fair amount of walking between exhibits.

  • The Space City is generally wheelchair and stroller accessible, though access to some exhibits may be limited.

How to Get to There

The Space City is located 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers) southeast of Toulouse so takes around 20 minutes by car. To arrive by public transport, take metro line A from Toulouse’s main Matabiau train station to Joliment and transfer to the Ligne 1 bus line, which stops outside and takes you directly to the museum.

When to Get There

Opening days and times for the Space City vary throughout the year so it’s recommended to check the schedule in advance. Travelers on a budget can make the most of reduced ticket prices by visiting in low season (between September to May, and outside of school holidays), while evening visits are also possible on select days during July and August.

Family Fun at Space City

Exhibitions at the Space City are suitable for all ages but there is also a number of attractions aimed specifically at children between six to 12 years. Kids can have fun learning about space at the Children's Base; take a tour of the solar system at the Stellarium, a special planetarium designed for younger visitors; try out a spacesuit and space sleeping bag; and let off some steam at the space-themed Little Astronaut Square playground.
