Sheung Wan
Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Located just west of Central, Sheung Wan is one of the hippest districts in Hong Kong. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Sheung Wan is a vibrant mix of trendy coffee shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and creative spaces, as well as more traditional shops, markets, and temples.
The Basics
The best way to explore Sheung Wan is on foot. Wander past the traditional dried seafood and herbal medicine shops of Bonham Strand and Koh Shing Street. Stop at historic Western Market and Man Mo Temple, then browse for art and antiques on Hollywood Road and Cat Street. Immerse yourself in up-and-coming creative talent at PMQ, or the boutiques around Po Hing Fong and Tai Ping Shan Street. This area also has some of the best eateries in town.
Visit Sheung Wan independently or join a half-day guided walking tour. Choose a food or shopping tour, or join a small-group sightseeing tour. For the best value, opt for a full-day tour that also includes attractions such as Victoria Peak and Stanley Market.
Things to Know Before You Go
Sheung Wan is a must for art and antique lovers, foodies, and nightlife enthusiasts.
Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk.
Don’t forget your camera; there’s plenty of street art all around.
Reservations are necessary at some of the more popular restaurants in the area.
How to Get There
Sheung Wan is located on Hong Kong Island, just west of Central. Take the MTR to Sheung Wan Station. There may be some steep hills, which you can avoid by taking the Central–Mid-Level Escalator uphill. A scenic way to reach Sheung Wan is to take the tram, which makes several stops in the district.
When to Get There
Sheung Wan can be visited at any time. Go during the day for the art, culture, and shopping; then come back in the evening for the amazing cuisine and lively nightlife. Many restaurants, bars, and clubs will be open late.
Central and Western Heritage Trail
The Sheung Wan Route covers 35 historic buildings and sites in the district, and includes Central Market, Pottinger Street, the old site of Possession Point, the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, and the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum.
