Shanghai Zoo (Shanghai Dongwu Yuan)

The Basics

Shanghai Zoo is divided into five main exhibition areas: amphibians, birds, carnivores, herbivores, and primates. The giant pandas are a popular attraction and a must-see, and the zoo features the largest number of gorillas in China. Animals from around the world include giraffes, cougars, kangaroos, penguins, and polar bears. Built on the site of a former golf club, Shanghai Zoo is also known for its well-maintained green areas, which cover 25 acres (10 hectares) and include 100,000 trees.

Things to Know Before You Go

• Shanghai Zoo is a must-visit for families with children. A dedicated children’s area has pony rides and a petting zoo.

• The grounds of the zoo are extensive; wear comfortable shoes if you don’t plan to take the (paid) electric shuttle.

• Bring a hat and sun protection if visiting during the summer.

• Local visitors often ignore posted signs and throw food and garbage at animals to get their attention.

• The Shanghai Zoo is largely wheelchair and stroller friendly, although some areas, such as the Reptile House, are not.

How to Get There

The zoo is located in the western part of Shanghai, near Hongqiao airport. By metro, take line 10 to the Shanghai Zoo stop (exit 4). By bus, take line 57, 91, 328, 519, 721, 807, 865, 911, 941, or 1207 to Shanghai Zoo Station.

When to Get There

Shanghai Zoo is open year-round, with slightly reduced hours from November to February. Weekends and public holidays are popular times to visit; expect large crowds then. Visit during feeding time, usually around 10am and 3pm, for added excitement.

Animals Native to China

In addition to the giant panda, Shanghai Zoo features around 600 animals that are indigenous to China. These include a golden snub-nosed monkey, South China tiger, Manchurian tiger, Yangtze alligator, blossom peacock, scimitar-horned oryx, Bactrian camel, and great hornbill.
