Royal Shakespeare Theatre
Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire
There are few places more fitting to watch one of Shakespeare’s plays than in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of the iconic playwright. The town’s most prestigious venue is undoubtedly the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the official home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Built in 1932, the theatre was designed by Elisabeth Scott, one of Britain’s first female architects.
As well as hosting regular dramatic performances, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre features on many Stratford-upon-Avon tours, which range from hop-on hop-off bus tours to Shakespeare-focused history tours, and day trips that also cover the Cotswolds. On a theatre tour, explore the front of house, peek behind-the-scenes, visit the grounds and gardens, and get a backstage look at rehearsal rooms and the costume store. Alternatively, the theater’s 104-foot (32-meter) tower offers far-reaching views over Stratford-upon-Avon.
*The 1,000-seat Royal Shakespeare Theatre is a must-visit for literary enthusiasts and history buffs. *The Rooftop Restaurant and Riverside café serve up everything from afternoon tea to cocktails. *There’s a gift shop on-site that sells Shakespeare-themed souvenirs and gift vouchers to spend on RSC productions. *The theatre is fully wheelchair and stroller accessible.
The theatre is located on the banks of the River Avon, a short drive from Junction 15 on the M40. From Stratford-upon-Avon train station—which is serviced by trains from both London and BIrmingham—the theatre is a 15-minute walk.
Royal Shakespeare Theatre presents an ever-changing programme of both Shakespeare and classic plays. Tours typically depart multiple times per day, but during the peak summer season advance booking is required.
As the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon is home to a plethora of Shakespeare-themed attractions. Highlights include Shakespeare’s Birthplace, where you can explore the house where the playwright was born and grew up, and the 500-year-old Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, where Shakespeare's wife and 13 generations of her family resided.
