Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum (Museo Casa Natal de Picasso)
Plaza de la Merced 15, Malaga, Andalucia, 29012
Pablo Picasso’s life in Spain spanned nearly all of the country’s corners, but his former family home in the heart of Malaga’s old town is where you’ll find the Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum (Museo Casa Natal de Picasso). It houses over 4,000 pieces by some 200 artists, including Picasso, and artifacts from his early life.
The basics
Book a guided small-group or private tour of the Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum to get an intimate, comprehensive look at his work and life. Inside, explore a variety of objects related to Picasso’s childhood, family, and his connection to Spain and the South. The house also serves as the headquarters for the Fundación Picasso, a foundation that studies and promotes the artist’s work. A visit to the museum can also be combined with a sightseeing tour of Malaga.
Things to know before you go
The museum and the rest of the houses along the northeast side of the plaza make up what was known as Casas de Campos after its developer, Antonio Campos Garin.
The museum’s capacity is limited, so you may need to wait to enter during busy days.
The on-site shop in the lobby sells publications and other products related to Picasso.
A free audio guide is available in Spanish, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Chinese.
How to get there
Remember that the Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum differs from the larger Museo Picasso Malaga, which is not far from his childhood home and focuses solely on his artwork. The Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum is centrally located in Malaga’s old quarter on the Plaza de la Merced and is within walking distance of other major attractions, including the Roman Theatre, Gibralfaro Castle, and the Alcazaba.
When to get there
The museum is open daily from 9:30am to 8pm; free admission is offered on Sunday afternoons from 4pm to 8pm. It is closed on Jan. 1 and Dec. 25. There are also regular events, including national and international exhibitions and conferences, all relating to Picasso.
Museo Picasso Malaga
Unlike the Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum, which includes other artists, the Museo Picasso Malaga showcases only work by the man himself. Its collection ranges from early academic studies to cubism to Picasso's late re-workings of Old Masters. Art lovers interested in Picasso will want to combine a visit here with a stop at the Pablo Picasso Birthplace Museum.
