Old Main Bridge (Alte Mainbrücke)
Alte Mainbrücke, Wurzburg, Germany, 97070
Castle views, a party atmosphere, and baroque saint statues are all features of Würzburg’s beloved main bridge. The pedestrianized crossing, best known as the Alte Mainbrücke, has linked the altstadt (old city) to the Marienberg Fortress hill for centuries, with its original 12th-century structure replaced in the 15th century. Today it’s a popular hangout to sip Franconian wine, against a River Main backdrop.
The basics
With its central location, the Old Main Bridge is one of those city attractions that every traveler is bound to visit. Often compared to the Charles Bridge in Prague, this landmark has been immortalized in Würzburg vacation snaps and memories. As such, many walking tours include it in their itineraries, stopping for photos and to share some of the history behind the saint statues, and sometimes finishing with a drink.
Things to know before you go
This is an iconic Würzburg photo point; visit in the daytime for fewer people and clear views of the Marienberg Fortress.
The nearest public restrooms are the Parkhaustoiletten, a 5-minute walk north on the Mainkai.
Wheelchair users and families with kids in strollers should note that the pavement is cobbled.
How to get there
The bridge crosses the River Main, and most visitors reach it simply by walking through the altstadt. If you’re arriving in central Würzburg by public transportation, it’s a 20-minute walk from the station or only a few minutes away from the Rathaus tram stops. Most people in the altstadt will be able to direct you.
When to get there
The pedestrianized bridge is a public crossing, freely accessible at any time, all through the year. The best time to experience it, though, is on a sunny summer evening, ideally with a sundowner drink in hand.
Brüchenschoppen on the bridge
There are a few bars and kiosks at the end of the bridge that serve wine by the glass. You pay a deposit for the glass when you order, and then you can wander along the bridge to enjoy your drink as you go. Locals call this brüchenschoppen. Look on the wine lists for a local Franconian wine like the popular silvaner (aka the King of Franken) or ask one of the bartenders for a recommendation.
