Muttrah is an enchanting district and former fishing village situated in Oman’s Muscat province. It is known as one of the country’s busiest commercial hubs, thanks to its bustling sea port and Muttrah Souq—a traditional bazaar (and one of the oldest marketplaces in the world) that has been operating since the age of sail.
The basics
The Muttrah Souk is still a center for trading and shopping today, for locals and visitors alike. Nestled beneath a timber roof, the bazaar features vendors selling everything from spices and perfumes to silks and jewelry. Many Muscat city tours include the Muttrah Souk as a stop, letting tourists marvel at the colorful maze of stalls and lanes. After haggling for treasures, take a stroll along the Port Sultan Qaboos (ideally with a cup of Arabic coffee) to admire this captivating city.
Things to know before you go
Visit the Muttrah Souk earlier in the day, as it can become quite crowded closer to the evening and after sunset.
The Souk is closed from 1pm until 4pm (aka the hottest part of the day).
The main thoroughfare runs north to south from the main entrance—this is where you’ll find most tourist-oriented shops.
Shop around for specific items; prices are negotiable and haggling is expected.
How to get there
The easiest way to get to Muttrah is by flying into Muscat International Airport, which connects to major cities across the globe. From there, catch a taxi to Muttrah—it should be about a 30-minute ride. Alternatively, hop on a shared minibus or take a private transfer from any of the major hotels in Muscat.
When to get there
If you’re looking to enjoy perfect city-exploring weather, plan your visit during the winter months (between November and March). The temperature remains pleasant during this season, with an average temperature in the mid- to high-70s (around 24°C), making it ideal for outdoor activities like wandering through the traditional markets and visiting the iconic Muttrah Fort.

Muttrah was once a thriving trade hub, with many ships passing through its bustling port on their way to Asia, Africa, and Europe. Beyond the popular souk, you can catch a glimpse of this long history by visiting the old Portuguese Muttrah Fort, just a short walk from the popular market. It was thought to have been built in the 16th century to protect the port from invaders, and its hilltop position affords some of the best views of the surrounding town and harbor.
