Museum of Glass and Crystal (Museo del Vidrio y Cristal)

Plazuela Santísimo Cristo de la Sangre 2, Malaga, Andalucia, 29012

Malaga’s Museo del Vidrio y Cristal (Museum of Glass and Crystal) showcases more than 3,000 pieces from the 6th century BC to the 20th century. Located in an 18th-century Casa Palacio (“palace house”) in the center of town, the decorative arts museum is one of the few dwellings from this era to be preserved in Malaga.

The basics

Because all visits to the Museo del Vidrio y Cristal are guided (for no additional charge), travelers can explore the museum at their convenience and as part of a day of sightseeing. The museum is furnished with spacious patios and gardens, like a home with an intimate atmosphere. Antique sofas, rugs, mirrors, and paintings sit alongside the glass pieces displayed in cabinets.

The collection is divided across two floors and into various historical eras, with period furniture from each era to complement the glass pieces, including English pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows; brightly-colored Phoenician pieces; and Catalan, Dutch, Bohemian, and Venetian lead glass.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum has a ramp, lift, and modified toilet facilities, as well as a walker and wheelchair that are available to borrow.

  • The tours last about an hour and are conducted in Spanish, English, French, and Italian.

  • Visitors cannot eat, drink, or smoke in the museum.

How to get there

Located in the center of Malaga, just outside the city’s historical district, Museo del Vidrio y Cristal is easily accessible from other major attractions, including Museo Casa Natal de Picasso and Teatro Cervantes. It’s a 10-minute walk from nearby bus stops and a 20-minute walk from the Malaga-Centro-Alameda train station.

When to get there

Museo del Vidrio y Cristal is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11am to 7pm (with the last entry at 6pm), and is open Dec. 24 and 31, from 11am to 3pm. The museum is closed on Mondays, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Jan. 6, and for August.

Interactive Music Museum (Museo Interactivo de la Música Málaga)

Housed in a former Baroque palace, the Museo Interactivo de la Música Málaga (MIMMA) is interactive, with many of its instruments available for visitors to play, like violins, guitars, drums, and unique instruments such as didgeridoos from Australia and ancient Celtic bagpipes. Visitors can also learn about the future of music at the MIMMALab, an interdisciplinary space intended to develop and experiment with concepts linked to music and acoustics.
