Mundo Alpaca Arequipa

The basics

Although many people come to Mundo Alpaca just to see its adorable animals, there's plenty more to experience. There's a textile museum with samples of wool at different phases of processing, as well as an assortment of weaving machinery. A second small museum showcases beautiful examples of pre-Columbian textiles. The multi-room boutique sells alpaca and vicuña sweaters, scarves, socks, and more. While you can visit Mundo Alpaca independently, a number of tours include a stop here alongside other Arequipa highlights.

How to get there

Mundo Alpaca is located on the northern end of Arequipa city center and is easy to get to on foot. The entrance is about a 15-minute walk directly north of Plaza de Armas—Arequipa's main square—and 10 minutes on foot from the Santa Catalina Monastery.

When to get there

Mundo Alpaca is open every day of the week from morning until evening. To beat the crowds, plan a trip first thing in the morning. Because much of the complex is outdoors or semi-open, it's best to visit during the cooler season, which runs from around April until November, particularly if you're visiting during the afternoon.

Shopping for Alpaca Sweaters in Arequipa

Arequipa is one of the best places in Peru to buy authentic alpaca sweaters, as well as knock-offs and blended sweaters that are mixed with acrylic yarn. While you can count on quality if you buy products from the Mundo Alpaca shop, you’ll find a mixed bag at some of the other vendors around town. One way to check quality is by touch: If an item feels cold at first, it’s likely the real deal.
