POINT OF INTEREST

Medieval Torture Museum

Chicago, IL

Leave the kids at home for this one, folks. Chicago’s Medieval Torture Museum is a garish, gory look at implements and devices of cruelty from days of yore. From one-off murderers and madmen, from the eccentric to the government-sanctioned, the exhibits often leave visitors feeling many things—including gratitude for living in the 21st century.

The basics

The Medieval Torture Museum leaves no stone unturned when it comes to documenting humanity’s dark, twisted past (and, at times, present). Visitors will see hundreds of exhibits, from the Iron Maiden to the electric chair, and take heed: Many include life-size dummies for, let’s say, dramatic effect. Audio guides shed light on 50+ exhibits, detailing stories of those who did the unthinkable, those who lived through it, and those who didn’t. Visitors can also touch and interact with many of the displays and devices—which aren’t limited to Europe, by the way—giving a particularly eerie, sensory feel to the experience.

Things to know before you go

  • Every ticket includes a “ghost-hunting experience,” allowing visitors to “find” ghosts across the museum (and discover how they died).
  • Buy your tickets online, and you may be able to nab a discount.
  • While children are allowed, it’s suggested that those under 18 be accompanied by an adult.

How to get there

If you’re driving to Chicago’s Medieval Torture Museum, park in the Wabash-Randolph Parking Garage, as museum visitors get a discounted rate of US$8. Otherwise, take the CTA Brown Line to the State/Lake station, and walk for a couple blocks down State Street until you reach the museum.

When to get there

Go to the museum when you have about 2 hours to dedicate to the experience. Consider heading there early in the morning, when the crowds are pretty much non-existent, or after dark—the museum closes at 8pm or 9pm, depending on the day.

Chicago’s eccentric side

Chicago has no fear when it comes to having a bit of weird fun, and the Medieval Torture Museum is just the beginning. Hop on a haunted brewery tour, take a “crime and mob” bus tour, go on a citywide scavenger hunt, and more—all in the name of getting to know the Windy City.
