Maryland Science Center
601 Light St., Inner Harbor, Baltimore, MD
One of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States, the Maryland Science Center (MSC) in Baltimore has been attracting visitors of all ages since it opened in 1976. Across its three floors, you’ll find exhibits, a planetarium, and an observatory. Hands-on activities and demonstrations are designed to be engaging and fun, to get folks excited about science.
Highlights at the Maryland Science Center include more than a dozen full-size dinosaur skeletons; a unique interactive journey through the human body; and Newton’s Alley, a hands-on exhibit designed to encourage exploration of energy, force, and motion.
A mix of nature documentaries, travelogs, and Hollywood blockbusters play daily in the 400-seat, 5-storey 3D IMAX Theater, which costs extra. The Davis Planetarium offers everything from programs about the night sky to kid-friendly Sesame Street shows, while the rooftop urban observatory has a computer controlled telescope that lets you view planets and stars.
MSC is wheelchair accessible. Each level can be reached by ramps and elevators and there are multiple accessible restrooms.
Strollers are allowed in the exhibits but not in the theater.
All planetarium and IMAX shows are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
You can exit and re-enter MSC as often as you like throughout the day, but be sure to keep your valid wristband on.
The Maryland Science Center is located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, close to many other city attractions including the National Aquarium. If you’re driving, you can reach the MSC from I-95 and I-295 from the south or by I-95 and I-83 from the north and I-70 to the west. MSC validates parking at a handful of nearby garages: check the website for details. Light rail and MARC Trains stop at Camden Yards, just four blocks away.
The Maryland Science Center is open from Wednesday through Sunday year-round, from mid-morning until late afternoon—slightly later on weekends. Saturdays and Sundays are typically busiest, so avoid crowds by visiting on a weekday morning. The IMAX Theater’s programming changes daily so check the MSC website’s calendar for details.
The Maryland Science Center is a big hit with younger visitors but adults also enjoy their own science-infused programming. The center hosts evening events throughout the year, which include hands-on activities, demonstrations accompanied by happy-hour cocktails, and special features such as visual music shows. Check the MSC calendar online for the latest on adult programs.
