Malaga Museum of Wine (Museo del Vino)

Plaza de los Viñeros 1, Malaga, Andalucia, 29008

The Malaga Museum of Wine (Museo del Vino) celebrates one of Spain’s most important wine regions, famous for its muscatel. Housed in the 18th-century Palacio de Biedmas, the museum traces the province’s winemaking history through a collection of wine labels, posters, and artifacts, and visitors can sample local wines in the shop.

The basics

The museum illustrates Malaga’s winemaking beginning with the Phoenicians, covering 3,000 years of history through the Greeks, Romans, and Moors via exhibits on the upper floor. The ground floor is devoted to the area’s modern winemaking history, with a vast collection of labels and advertising posters from the 19th and 20th centuries. Here you’ll also learn about Malaga’s five districts and three wine-growing regions, as well as the types of grapes grown in each; admire antique wine presses while gaining insights about aging techniques today; and complete your trip by tasting a sweet AO Malaga and a dry AO Sierra de Malaga. The museum can be visited as part of a hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city.

How to get there

The Museum of Wine is located in the center of Malaga, an easy walk from many of the city sights. You can also reach the museum via hop-on,-hop-off bus, Metro Line 2, or a number of local bus routes.

When to get there

The museum is open from morning to the end of the business day on weekdays, and morning to afternoon on Saturdays; it’s closed Sunday. The cool interiors offer a welcome respite for the midday heat in the scorching summer months, so stop by to break up your sightseeing when the temperatures soar.

Malaga’s Picasso Museum

Malaga is the birthplace of muscatel wine and of the 20th-century artist, Pablo Picasso. The city pays homage to its most famous citizen at the Malaga Picasso Museum (Museo Picasso Malaga), which houses more than 200 original works by Picasso in its permanent collection, and another 160 on loan. Learn about the artist’s evolution through a number of periods and styles over eight decades of work, displayed inside the 16th-century Buenavista Palace and adjacent townhouses that now make up this award-winning museum.
