POINT OF INTEREST

House Museum of Mouse Perez (Casa Museo de Ratón Pérez)

Calle del Arenal 8, Floor 1, Madrid, Spain, 28013

A popular character in Spanish culture, Raton Perez is a celebrated part of childhood—like the Tooth Fairy—that exchanges a child's lost tooth for a gift. At the family-friendly Raton Perez House Museum, visitors learn about this Spanish tradition, the history of the fable, and see baby teeth of historical figures, like Beethoven and Newton.

The basics

The Raton Perez House Museum is an ideal family destination, located in the very same place that Raton Perez is said to live in the story. Kids enjoy learning about the character, checking out story memorabilia, and following the guide on a kid-friendly tour. Since the museum is conveniently located in the Sol-Gran Via area of Madrid, numerous city tours pass by the museum, and it's easy to reach on Madrid's clean and efficient metro system.

Things to know before you go

  • Kids aged five and older shouldn't miss the Raton Perez House Museum, to learn about this famous children's character.
  • Fans of children's books and illustrations enjoy the museum's displays of Raton Perez-related memorabilia and art.
  • If you want to take a tour, be sure to book in advance, to confirm availability.
  • Expect to pay a small fee to enter the museum.

How to get there

Located near the bustling Puerta del Sol, you'll most easily find The Raton Perez Museum by taking the metro. Take the 1, 2, or 3 train to the Sol stop, or the 5 train to the Opera stop. Many city sightseeing tours also pass Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor—two nearby squares—but you'll need to visit independently to explore the museum exhibitions.

When to get there

The Raton Perez House Museum is open seven days a week. On Monday, the museum is open from 5pm to 8pm, and Tuesday through Friday, from 11am to 2pm, and 5pm to 8pm. On Saturday, the museum is open from 11am to 3pm, and 4pm to 8pm. Weekends are busiest at the museum, so plan to visit during the week to avoid crowds.

Exploring Madrid's Public Squares

Just around the corner from the museum visitors find a vibrant square in the heart of the city, Puerta del Sol. Perhaps best known for its clocktower—used for Spain's annual New Year's Eve countdown—the square is also a popular meeting place for locals, and it's packed with cafés, shops, and buskers playing music for passersby. Just a short walk along Calle Mayor and you reach Plaza Mayor. Enjoy fantastic people watching, and a wide variety of restaurants to enjoy a meal.
