Casino Barrière de Deauville
2 Rue Edmond Blanc, Deauville, France, 14800
Built in 1912, this lavish casino is in the heart of Deauville, overlooking the sandy beaches of the Normandy coastline. Slots and games can be played year-round, but the landmark offers more than gambling, including multiple restaurants, a theater, two bars, and a karaoke club.
The basics
The obvious draw here is the casino itself, with 300 slot machines and a range of table games, poker, and touchscreen games. But even if you’re not looking to gamble, you can enjoy other spaces within the luxurious setting. The Italian-style theater hosts concerts, comedy shows, and plays, while Le Plaza Café serves brasserie fare and Le Cercle is known for its haute cuisine.
Things to know before you go
A national identity card or a valid passport is required to enter the casino, so be sure to have one of these forms of ID on hand.
There’s no strict dress code, but clothing should be appropriate for an upscale venue. Leave the tank tops, shorts, or bathing suits for the beach.
The casino floor is family-friendly, but only adults aged 18 (and a day) or older will be able to play any of the games.
It is free to enter the casino. Needless to say, placing a bet will cost you. Keep in mind that slot machines use a ticket system for betting.
How to get there
Deauville is reachable by car from Paris; simply stick to the A13 motorway. Count on a couple of hours, depending on where you’re coming from. There are also daily connections by train between Paris Saint-Lazare and Deauville-Trouville. Rides take just over two hours, and the casino is a 15-minute walk from the station. There are also ferry crossings between the nearby port of Le Havre and Portsmouth in England.
When to get there
Deauville is at its liveliest during the summer months, when the French flock to the coast. Each September, the city hosts the Deauville American Film Festival. The casino is typically open from mid-morning until late night; on most days, table games begin in the evening and last until closing time, while on Fridays and Saturdays, you can start playing a few hours earlier.
Where to bask in Deauville’s glamorous aura
One of France’s most famous seaside resorts, Deauville has been attracting the country’s most fashionable citizens for well over 150 years. Follow in the footsteps of Coco Chanel and other icons of the roaring ’20s during a stroll down Deauville’s wooden promenade. Catch a game of polo at the Hippodrome de Deauville La-Toques racecourse, and hit the beach to photograph the city’s colorful parasols and art deco–style beach huts.
