Alpilles Regional Nature Park (Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles)

2 Boulevard Marceau, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, 13210

Stretching over 310 square miles (500 square kilometers between Arles and Avignon, the Alpilles Natural Regional Park combines traditional villages, olive groves, and vineyards with mountainous landscapes and abundant wildlife. Vincent Van Gogh spent time at the foot of the Alpilles range and these mountains are featured in the background of many of his works.

The basics

Outdoor lovers will find much to do in the Alpilles. The region is rich in flora and fauna and will delight hikers with its many marked trails. Birdwatchers can spy owls, Bonelli’s eagles, and rare vultures and climbers will enjoy challenging limestone cliffs. History and culture enthusiasts won’t want to miss touring the region’s ancient Medieval villages such as Saint-Rémy de Provence and Les Baux-de-Provence. Take a guided tour of the area’s villages to learn about the region’s rich history and culture.

Things to know before you go

  • A must-see for outdoor adventure and wildlife lovers.
  • Bring your hiking boots; the trails in the Alpilles are rocky and mountainous.
  • Pick up trail maps and learn about the region’s natural landscape at the Alpilles Museum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

How to get there

Alpilles Natural Regional Park is within a 30-minute drive from both Avignon and Arles. Having a car will make exploring this region easier since buses run infrequently and stops are limited. Alternatively, booking a guided tour of the region is an easy and convenient way to ensure you see all the top tourist sights.

When to get there

The Alpilles are very hot and dry during the summer months so the best time to visit is between late summer through October. Spring weather can be pleasant, but unpredictable, which can pose a challenge for hikers and mountain bikers. The villages get quite busy during the summer months so visit outside the main tourist season, if you can, for a more authentic experience.

The Villages of the Alpilles

Alpilles Natural Regional Park envelops fifteen small towns and villages including Eygalières, Saint-Rémy de Provence, and Les Baux-de-Provence. Eygalières sits on the northern edge of the Alpilles range and offers scenic trails through nearby olive groves and vineyards as well as a lively village market. Les Baux-de-Provence is known for its Medieval fortress ruins and picturesque cobbled streets. Visitors are drawn to Saint-Rémy de Provence to see the village where Vincent Van Gogh spent a year in asylum and painted many of his famous works.
