A trip to Jacksonville means you’re under 30 minutes away from the beach, giving you a convenient way to enjoy the ocean without having to pay oceanfront prices for accommodations. But swimming in the Atlantic and sunbathing on the sand aren’t the only things to do in the area.
Jacksonville itself has a zoo, museums, lots of eateries and many other reasons to visit. Now comes the hard part — deciding where you should stay, when to come and what to do in town. Our AAA travel experts are here to help make your vacation planning go much smoother.
The following Jacksonville travel guide takes a lot of the planning process off your shoulders. You’ll know when to visit, how to save money, where to go for day trips and much more.
How to Get Around Jacksonville
Having a car at your disposal is the most convenient and easiest way to see the area. If you’ll be driving here or renting a car, you can get around downtown, get out to the beaches and explore neighboring towns whenever you want.
But don’t worry if you weren’t planning to drive around due to traffic or other reasons. Jacksonville has public transportation you can use to travel around the city and surrounding areas. We’ll give you more details on all of the options you have for getting around the Bold City.
Driving and Parking
Jacksonville’s over 800 square miles, so being able to get behind the wheel of your vehicle to get around is the easiest option. Just note that major highways pass through the heart of the city, including I-295 and I-95. That leads to a lot of traffic at times. You might also get stuck in traffic along Beach Blvd (Route 40) during beach season.
If you’re planning to go sightseeing in downtown, be ready to pay for parking. Jacksonville has metered parking, but it’s free on weekends and on weekdays after 6 p.m.
Public Transportation
Taking a bus, rail or trolley lets you avoid rush hour or beach traffic, giving you more time to enjoy your visit. Jacksonville’s public transportation options include:
- JTAFLA buses: Over 30 routes available
- Skyway monorail: Free rail service through downtown
- Riverside Avondale Night Trolley: Only runs the first Friday and Saturday of the month
Walking/Biking
Using your own two feet is an easy way to get around the downtown area to explore places like the Southbank Riverwalk. You can also rent a bike and head down the area’s trails, such as the Jacksonville Baldwin Rail Trail.
Best Time to Visit Jacksonville
Any time of year makes for a great vacation here, but whether or not you’ll get the most enjoyment out of your visit depends on what you’re looking for. Jacksonville can get crowded at times, driving up accommodation rates and airfare. Other times might be too hot and humid — or even too cold — for you.
If you’re looking for the lowest rates, plan to go in winter.
The colder temperatures in this part of Florida mean the beaches are fairly empty — and that means reduced rates. For slightly higher temps, springtime or fall is a good time to visit. You’ll also have lower rates and more pleasant weather for beach strolls.
If you’re dreaming of a beach vacation, summertime is best.
Sunny days give you great weather for heading to Ponte Verde Beach or Jacksonville Beach. However, walking around to explore the city or other areas can be tougher thanks to the humidity and heat. Note that summer also means crowds and high rates.
Top Things to Do in Jacksonville
There’s really no chance of getting bored or having nothing to do during your trip here. If you're visiting in the winter or just don't happen to be a beach person, the area offers many other places to see that don’t involve going to the ocean. Jacksonville has something for everybody in your family or travel group to enjoy, whether you're looking for Arts, culture, animals or even the great outdoors.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
North of downtown along the St Johns River is where you’ll find thousands of animals from all different ecosystems and habitats. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has multiple exhibits with native species, including Asian gardens, African forests and Florida’s local wildlife. Those interested in botanicals will enjoy seeing plantlife such as bamboo orchids, bromeliads, acacia—and plenty of other plants.
The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens
A Jacksonville resident’s private collection has now become an impressive one that the general public can enjoy. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens features artwork ranging from centuries ago to contemporary pieces. The beautiful gardens offer different themed areas to wander through. For lower crowd levels, it's recommended to visit the museum on weekdays if possible.
Little Talbot Island State Park
This does involve heading toward the coast—but not for sunbathing and swimming. Instead, it’s more of a spot for outdoor enthusiasts who love hiking, biking and similar activities. You won’t find developed beach areas here, but you’ll get to explore miles of bike trails, go beachcombing and watch for local birds.
Riverside/5 Points Culinary Tour
- Duration: 3 hours
Being in town for a week or less doesn’t give you much time to explore all of Jacksonville’s top dining spots. However, this doesn't mean you need to extend your stay. You can book a culinary tour of the Riverside and 5 Points areas to sample foods from the best local eateries. You’ll also recieve cocktails and wines to pair with your food.
Downtown City Tour
- Duration: 3 hours
If you don’t want to miss out on the city’s more iconic sights and offerings, you can go on a tuk-tuk tour of the downtown area for a history lesson. From the Treaty Oak to the towering Main St Bridge, your guide will make sure you see the city’s best sights.

Jacksonville Photo Spots
A trip to Jacksonville provides the perfect opportunity to capture lasting memories, whether it's a new family photo or scenic snapshots to look back on for years to come. With beautiful beach areas for sunlit seaside pictures, a striking city skyline and numerous local landmarks, there are plenty of picturesque spots to explore and photograph.
1. Cummer Museum and Gardens
If you're planning a visit to the Cummer Museum and Gardens, be sure to take advantage of its many stunning photo opportunities. The beautifully landscaped English Garden features majestic oaks and cypress trees, while the Italian Garden offers elegant marble statues and vibrant azaleas. Inside the museum, you can capture memorable photos alongside classic works of art, including Renaissance-era paintings and 19th-century European sculptures.
2. Jacksonville Beach Pier
If you’re spending time near the shore, you’ll likely take many pictures of the Atlantic Ocean from the beach. However, for even more stunning photographs you can take a stroll along the Jacksonville Beach Pier. It has a small fee for access, but once there you can take your time looking for the perfect picturesque scenes and backdrops.
3. Boneyard Beach at Big Talbot Island State Park
While the name of this photo spot may sound ominous, it isn’t as morbid as it might sound. The boneyard name refers to the petrified trees you’ll find all over the beach. These bleached branches provide you with eye-catching backdrops for your travel pictures, especially if you go just as the sun is setting or rising. It’s a 45-minute drive from the city to the beach, but for many, the photos are worth the time and travel.
4. Main St Bridge in Downtown
The downtown area has many potential photo sites for vacation memories, but one that stands out is the colorful Main Street Bridge going over the St. Johns River. Stand with the bridge in the distance as your backdrop or use its walkway for a picture with it looming over you for a dramatic look.
5. Memorial Park
The Jacksonville area might be known for its Atlantic beaches, but it also has the St. Johns River flowing through it. Head over to Memorial Park for romantic photos or family photos with the river as your backdrop. The ideal spot is right in front of the park’s fountain and statue. Pack a picnic lunch for afternoon pics or visit the park near sunset for the most beautiful photos.
Day Trips from Jacksonville
Visiting Jacksonville provides a wonderful opportunity to relax on the sand at nearby beaches, including Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach. Beyond the shoreline, there are several charming towns and scenic destinations perfect for a day trip. From historic communities to beautiful forests and parks, here are some top recommendations from our AAA team.
1. Canaveral National Seashore, FL
- Distance: 116 miles
Sure, you can stay nearby and enjoy the water and sun-soaked beaches right in the Jacksonville area. But you’d be missing out on all the adventures you can have at Canaveral National Seashore. Drive right down I-95 S and you’ll be at the shore in under two hours. Once you’re there, visit Turtle Mound historic site, fish in Mosquito Lagoon and explore Playalinda and Apollo beaches.
2. Ocala National Forest, FL
- Distance: 103 miles
If you’re searching for a good place to hike, head a couple hours south for Ocala National Forest. There are multiple trails to explore, like Bear Swamp Trail or Clearwater Lake Nature Trail, however, you don’t have to stick to land. You can also go swimming in Alexander Springs Recreation Area or other areas, take a canoe out on the water or even go scuba diving.
3. Amelia Island, FL
- Distance: 33 miles
For a charming place to explore, take I-95 N and The Buccaneer Trail to get to Amelia Island. It’s under an hour away, making it a perfect place for your day trip. Stroll through the streets of Fernandina Beach’s downtown area for art galleries, boutique stores and candy shops. Book a guided kayak tour of Lofton Creek to see the area’s waters—and wildlife—up close, including gators and manatees.
4. Cumberland Island, GA
- Distance: 38 miles
This is a day trip destination that you won't be able to drive to, so it's important to plan ahead. You’ll have to catch a passenger ferry over to Cumberland Island, unless you have access to a private boat. Take the ferry from St Marys, GA, to visit an island where you can go swimming, look for fossilized shark teeth and hike along Nightingale Trail or River Trail.
5. St Augustine, FL
- Distance: 41 miles
Drive onto I-95 S to be in the oldest city in the country in less than an hour. As you can imagine, St. Augustine has many iconic and historic places to see, like Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth and the St Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. For modern-day fun, go kayaking at Anastasia State Park or visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
Visiting Jacksonville on a Budget
Sunbathing and swimming at the coast won’t cost you much, but accommodations and other expenses can add up during a trip to Jacksonville. Whether you have a strict budget or just want to see how far you can stretch your money, we’ve got some helpful tips for lowering vacation costs.
1. Visit parks, beaches and other free things to do in Jacksonville. We’ve already recommended going to the beach for a budget-friendly activity. However, you can take in the area’s many other free attractions, like Memorial Park and the Riverwalk. Check local museums and other places for free admission days, too. Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens offers these on certain days, including the 4th Friday of each month.
2. Plan a winter getaway — or a spring or fall trip. Many places in Florida have high winter rates as people from up north head down to escape the cold. But that’s not the case in this northeastern FL city. Jacksonville’s winters aren’t as warm as Miami and other South Florida cities, so that often leads to decreased rates on hotels and airfare. You can save money in autumn and spring as well, though rates may not be as cheap as in winter.
3. Cash in on airline and hotel loyalty reward points and miles. If you’ve been collecting reward points, a trip like this could be a great opportunity to use them. Redeem your frequent flyer miles to pay less for flights to and from Jacksonville International Airport. Use hotel loyalty points or credit card points towards accommodation costs, so that you don’t have to pay full price.
4. Use your AAA membership for travel savings. As a loyal AAA member, you’ve got several discounts that might come in handy when traveling to Jacksonville. Use these to save on:
- Accommodations with our preferred lodging partners
- Vehicle discounts for your rental car
- Tickets for attractions, tours and other activities in and around Jacksonville
5. Book rooms in the city, not the beaches. Most people love having ocean views while visiting the area, but that also comes with high price tags. Staying in downtown Jacksonville means you’re only a short trip from the shore, so you can visit the beaches at anytime. In the meantime, you’ll be saving a lot on accommodation costs compared to oceanfront hotels and condos.
