Planning to drive overseas? You may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA.
International Driving Permits, sometimes referred to as an “international driver’s license” or “international permit,” are inexpensive, easy to obtain through AAA, and honored as a form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide. The permit contains your name, photo and driver information translated into 10 languages.
Why and When You Need an International Driving Permit
The 3 main reasons to carry an International Driving Permit:
- It’s valid in most countries. Some countries don’t recognize U.S. driver’s licenses, but do recognize International Driving Permits.
- It can reduce language barriers. An International Driving Permit will show your name and driver information translated into 10 languages.
- Some countries require an International Driving Permit in order for visitors to rent a vehicle.
Each country has its own requirements for foreign visitors who want to drive. Some, like Canada, recognize U.S. driver’s licenses. Others require an International Driving Permit in order to rent cars and/or drive a vehicle. It an important step to take if you plan on driving while doing international travel.
That’s why AAA recommends bringing an International Driving Permit along with your U.S. driver’s license to help avoid many potential hassles, especially if you’re traveling in a country where English is not the primary language. Even if an International Driving Permit is not required, you may encounter traffic police or other officials who can’t read your U.S. license but can read 1 of the 10 translations on your permit.
